Join AWC Civic Orchestra for Romantic Classics Concert


Yuma, AZ (February 6, 2019) – The Arizona Western College Civic Orchestra will be presenting a Romantic Classics Concert at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Historic Yuma Theater, 254 S. Main St.

The AWC Civic Orchestra, String Ambassadors, Young String Ambassadors, and Twinklers will be playing a collection of romantic themed music for an evening you won’t want to miss. Enjoy music from Abba, Neil Diamond, The Beatles, Grease, Dances with Wolves, and much more. Guest singers for this concert include Bill Regenhardt and Melody Dunn.

Endangered Species Mural to Raise Awareness at AWC


Sonoran Pronghorn and Yuma Clapper Rail both to be featured

Yuma, AZ (January 31, 2019) – Through a local donor and a project sponsored by the Center for Biological Diversity, AWC will become a mural host site for a 76-foot by 22-foot mural featuring two endangered Sonoran Desert species, the Sonoran pronghorn and the Yuma clapper rail. This is the 20th installment in the Center’s national Endangered Species Mural Project.

One Book Yuma author Barbara Jaquay to visit AWC


Yuma, AZ (January 31, 2019) – Come meet One Book Yuma author Dr. Barbara Jaquay as she presents on her book, “Where Have All the Sheep Gone?” on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Arizona Western College.

The book takes a look at sheep ranchers and shepherds and how they contributed to Arizona’s history. Jaquay is a historical geographer that has traveled the state to share this rich history. 

Course seeking English speakers looking to learn more Spanish


Conversation Exchange/Intercambio late-start class to begin Feb. 12

Yuma, AZ (January 31, 2019) – Arizona Western College is offering a late-start Conversation Exchange/Intercambio course for English and Spanish speakers interested in learning each other’s language.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Professor Nancy Blitz shared that additional English speakers with a Spanish level equivalent to Spanish 101 are being sought for the class.

Senior Day happening at AWC on Feb. 6


Yuma, AZ (January 31, 2019) – High school seniors in the Arizona Western College Talent Search and Upward Bound programs will be learning about scholarships and getting prepared for their first year of higher education during an upcoming Senior Day event.

On Wednesday, Feb. 6, the students will be visiting the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E, from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Seniors will be divided up on two different tracks, one for those going to AWC in the fall and the other for those going on to a university.

Nominations sought for AWC Hall of Fame


Yuma, AZ (January 28, 2019) – Arizona Western College is seeking nominations for the 2019 AWC Hall of Fame. Installed in 2013, the AWC Hall of Fame currently has 13 honorees, including 2018 inductees Dr. Kathryn Watson and Dr. George Montopoli, Coach Charlie Dine, and the 1983 and 1987 National Champion Softball Teams.

AWC is looking for nominees from Yuma and La Paz counties who have made a significant contribution to the mission of the college, or distinguished themselves in service to the larger world.

Former student shares Public Safety Dispatcher Academy experience


AWC now accepting applications for late-start program until Feb. 15 deadline

Yuma, AZ (January 24, 2019) – Before becoming a dispatcher, Shanell Hernandez had the impression that the job only entailed answering 911 calls. She quickly learned that the position involved so much more than just picking up the phone.

“It’s not just taking calls, you’re actually helping people over the phone,” said Hernandez. “You’re like a first responder in a way, because when someone calls 911, you’re technically the first responder until law enforcement arrives on scene.”
