February 4, 2025

Yuma, Ariz. (February 4, 2025) – The Arizona Western College (AWC) District Governing Board is pleased to announce the reappointment of Maria Chavoya to her third six-year term representing Yuma County in District #5. Additionally, Chavoya has been elected to continue serving as the Arizona Association of Community College Trustees (AACCT) representative for AWC.

"I am honored to continue serving District #5 and to represent AWC at the State level with AACCT," Chavoya said. "I am committed to advocating for the needs of our community and ensuring that our educational institutions continue to thrive."

Born and raised in Yuma, Chavoya is an active member of the community, serving on multiple boards including the Workforce Development Board, Arizona Community Health Workers Association, and other workforce coalitions. An advocate for mentorship and First Generation students, Chavoya participated in the April 2024 leadHERship workshop featuring a panel discussion on women in leadership. This event provided a platform for female leaders in the community to share their personal journeys and offer valuable advice to the next generation.

Chavoya was first elected to the District #5 seat in 2012. Over the past decade, she has demonstrated unwavering dedication and commitment to the community, bringing a wealth of experience and deep understanding of the needs of her constituents. She is currently employed by Arizona Complete Health and serves the La Paz, Mohave, Pinal and Yuma County and Ajo areas as the Community Relations Representative III.

AWC is governed by a five-member Board representing Yuma and La Paz Counties. The District Governing Board includes members of La Paz County Brad Sale (District 1) and Dr. Kenneth MacFarland (District 2); and three members from Yuma County: Dennis Booth (District 3), Olivia Zepeda (District 4), and Maria Chavoya (District 5). Board members serve six-year terms and hold public meetings throughout the year.
