Coming Spring 2017: MicroMetal Casting and Other Welding Courses
October 25, 2016Arizona Western College’s welding courses for the fall semester are 100% enrolled. This fall, AWC has offered many types of welding, metal sculpture, metal smithing and blacksmithing courses. There will be a full assortment of courses available next spring. Registration begins Monday, November 14 for the Spring 2017 semester.
During the spring 2017 semester, AWC is excited to have a MicroMetal Casting course that will incorporate skills associated with small metal fabrications and castings. Students will learn to design and then carve a wax model to be cast along with other related techniques for sawing, fitting and brazing a series of instructor lead projects. Students will work primarily in copper and bronze as an alternative to practice and instruction in more costly materials such as silver and gold. Techniques taught are easily adaptable to these materials.
The instructor for the course is Mr. Greg Bensel, who brings nearly 30 years of experience in the jewelry business as the lead smith at Yuma’s own Bensel Jewelers. The goal is to not only teach metal working and joining techniques but to allow students access to an instructor who brings extensive industry experience to the classroom for those who might be considering a career in the industry.
