AWC to offer education scholarship in La Paz County
February 7, 2019Funds to help develop “Grow Your Own Teacher” initiative
Parker, AZ (February 7, 2019) – La Paz County students interested in a career in Early or Secondary Education now have a new scholarship opportunity to apply for.
Arizona Western College is offering a scholarship for the EDU 110 – Intro to Education course, tuition, and books for up to 20 individuals who are interested in entering or exploring the education field. The course provides students with hands-on experience and observation time in classrooms in collaborating school districts.
“We are committed to our partnering school districts and would like to help with developing a ‘Grow Your Own Teacher Program’ where individuals will be able to complete both their associate’s and bachelor’s degrees while staying within La Paz County,” said Katheline Ocampo, AWC Associate Dean for La Paz County Services.
Technology based platforms such as the Interactive Television Network and Zoom help support individuals who are committed to earning a degree in education while staying within the community.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is Monday, Feb. 25. Additional funds may be available for future coursework dependent upon the number of scholarships utilized.
Scholarship recipients will also have a chance to participate in three workshops that introduce students to financial resources, faculty, advisors, and support services available locally and districtwide.
Workshops:
1. Your Goal, Your Success – Students will work with the facilitator to discuss potential barriers (internal and external) of success, how to manage and eventually breakdown barriers, determine what success looks like (from the perspective of the student) and introduce students to the different services available which support student success.
2. Navigating Your Degree – AWC to University: AWC Advisor and university partners from Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University will provide a workshop on best degree majors, program specialties, and opportunities of transferring from AWC to a university. Advisors will also assist students in tailoring their degree to meet personal goals and university requirements.
3. Financing Your Future – Scholarship and grant opportunities to reduce or eliminate college debt.
