First Gen College Celebration Week comes to AWC Nov. 4-7

October 30, 2024

Yuma, AZ (October 30, 2024) – Join Arizona Western College (AWC) in celebrating first-generation college students during First Gen College Celebration Week from November 4–7!

For the past eight years, institutions from across the nation have celebrated first-generation students, faculty, and staff on November 8, the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. This November, AWC has dedicated a week to celebrate the first-generation students that make up roughly 72% of the AWC student population and nearly 40% of the school’s faculty and staff.

AWC has collaborated with its partner universities—University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University—and the AWC Health & Wellness Department to host a variety of events including a student and alumni panel, an in-person and virtual financial literacy session, resource fairs, a job fair, and more.

“The First Gen panel this year will highlight the transfer experience of our First Gen college students from AWC and our university partners,” said Michelle Thomas, Director of TRIO Programs at AWC. “We also look forward to hearing the perspective of pre-college students preparing to begin their college experience as first-generation college students.”

A Financial Aid and Family Night will be held on Thursday, November 7th for the campus community in addition to TRIO Program students and families.

The 2024 First Gen College Celebration Week activities will take place across the AWC campuses in San Luis, Parker, and Yuma.
