Students earn finalist title, top state award at research competition
January 29, 2020Yuma, AZ (January 29, 2020) – Three students from Arizona Western College were recognized as Southwest Regional Finalists for their work on a Student Research League (SRL) competition project.
AWC students Misael Marquez, Cynthia Spence, and Wendy Szeto were named regional finalists during the American Mathematical Association for Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) annual conference in Milwaukee in November. They also earned first place in the competition for Arizona. Each team member earned a monetary award of $200, a plaque, and a certificate for their achievements.
Mentored by AWC Professor of Physics Dahwei Chang, the Yuma team completed a research project on the topic of this year’s competition, “To Grid or Not to Grid,” which addressed the best options for providing energy for residential use. Their SRL project was part of a research-based competition that was held by AMATYC in the spring of 2019.
The AWC team made it past the first round of evaluations and into the second round where they were evaluated against the top 10 papers from across the nation. There were about 50 teams that participated in the competition.
“In Spring 2018, SRL held its first research competition, and an AWC team won third place. This year, an AWC team was one of the finalists,” said Chang. “I hope that the results of this competition will encourage more AWC students to participate in future academic competitions.”
