Three weeks in Yuma to create a new 10-minute play

Yuma, AZ (November 20, 2024) – Join the Arizona Western College Theatre Club on November 22nd and 23rd for a unique event featuring five 10-minute plays written, directed, and performed by AWCTheatre students.

The AWCTheatre group has put together an exciting new challenge, dubbed 310inYuma, which requires students to write, rehearse, and design an original 10-minute play in under 3 weeks.

AWC Professor of Theatre Ann Wilkinson shared, “I was looking for a way to challenge AWCTheatre students to work together, dream, dare, and dramatize creatively. I think we found it!”

So, how does it work? AWCTheatre students had one week to assemble a writer, director, and up to four actors. Then, on November 7th, the five teams gathered at “The Reveal,” where they received the criteria for drafting their plays. Each team must utilize the same prop, a required line of dialogue, and the same set, designed by award-winning artist Tom Thatcher. Teams were then assigned theatrical styles that the script writers must adhere to. Between “The Reveal” and opening night, the teams have two weeks to write, stage, and rehearse their 10-minute plays.

Performances will be held on November 22nd and 23rd at 7 p.m. in the AWC Theatre. Cost for the event is $5 to support the AWCTheatre Club. A Yuma campus map can be found here.

To conclude the evening, teams will be judged by a panel and the audience will be able to vote on their favorite performance.
