Artist conversation to be held at Littlewood Co-Op following mural celebration
February 7, 2019Yuma, AZ (February 7, 2019) – Join us for an evening of conversation with mural artists Roger Peet and Lucinda Y. Hinojos. The artists will discuss and present their mural practice, including the national Endangered Species Mural Project and work celebrating Chicano culture and history, and conclude with a dialogue with the audience.
The free community event will be held Monday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. at the Littlewood Fine Arts & Community Co-Op, 1480 S. 2nd Ave.
“Murals are a great way to illuminate the things that make a place unique. We use them to talk about endangered wildlife and cultural issues that we think are important, experimenting to find a better way to foster a sense of civic and environmental connection,” said Peet.
Through a local donor and a project sponsored by the Center for Biological Diversity, Arizona Western College is the host site for a 76-foot by 22-foot mural featuring two endangered Sonoran Desert species, the Sonoran pronghorn and the Yuma clapper rail. This is the 20th installment in the Center’s national Endangered Species Mural Project.
The mural created by Peet and Hinojos is currently in progress and will be unveiled to the community during a public ceremony and ribbon cutting on Monday, Feb. 11, from 3 to 4 p.m. The artwork is located on the East-facing wall of the AWC Theatre building on the Yuma campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E, facing parking lot P11.
Artists and staff from the Center for Biological Diversity will be present during the celebration to discuss the threats these species face, including climate change and habitat loss, and to discuss their work to protect these and other species in the region.
Funded locally by art supporters Maria and Michael McKivergan, the mural also received approval throughout the process from AWC Fine Arts faculty.
