Fifth-grade students to visit campus as part of I’m Going to College event
November 12, 2019Yuma, AZ (November 12, 2019) – For the tenth year in a row, Arizona Western College is inviting fifth-grade students to attend the I’m Going to College event on the Yuma Campus.
On Thursday, Nov. 14, a group of 150 fifth graders from Otondo Elementary School will have an opportunity to experience a day as a college student. They will start off the morning with a mock orientation before participating in three mini college classes. Students will finish out the day with an achievement ceremony. Participants will also receive T-shirts with the year they will complete their bachelor’s degree.
Activities will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Schoening Conference Center, 2020 S. Ave. 8E. The mock graduation ceremony will be held at 12:40 p.m., with the programing concluding at 1:30 p.m.
AWC has been inviting elementary-age students to campus for the past decade to inspire them to consider higher education and to create a college-going culture in Yuma County. Over 2,460 students have come through the program.

9:30 – Students arrive and check in
9:45 – Welcome and Orientation (3C Schoening Conference Center)
10:30-10:55 – Class #1*
11:05-11:25 – LUNCH (3C grassy area)
11:35-12:00 – Class #2*
12:10-12:35 – Class #3*
12:40-1:25 – Achievement Ceremony (3C Schoening Conference Center)
*There will be five different classes taking place during each class slot.
