leadHERship workshop to help attendees harness the power of language
April 23, 2024San Luis, AZ (April 23, 2024) – The leadHERship initiative at Arizona Western College continues its commitment to gender equality and empowerment with a fourth upcoming workshop.
Selected as one of the 10 proposals funded by the 2024 AWC Innovation Fund, leadHERship has been at the forefront of fostering women empowerment and gender equality within the community. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Sara Amani, Professor of Multilingual Composition/Specialist; Maria Guzman, Advising and Student Services Coordinator; and Susie Zambrano, Associate Dean for South Yuma County Services, received $20,000 to implement the program.
Following the resounding success of the previous three workshops, leadHERship remains dedicated to cultivating an inclusive campus culture. This forthcoming event aims to help attendees see how language controls various aspects of society in the realms of gender norms, growth mindset, and other important areas.
Upcoming Workshop - "I Speak, Therefore I Am: Harnessing the Power of Language"
Scheduled for April 29, the next leadHERship workshop will focus on linguistic relativity, also known as the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, which is the idea that language controls the way a person understands and acts in the world. Dr. Sarah Snyder, Professor of English/Administrator of the Writing Program and Writing Intensive Curriculum, will facilitate the workshop, providing participants with an awareness of the power of language in their everyday lives and useful tips on how to change their language to change their world.
“It is extremely important for everyone to know how their language is affecting their world, and women especially have internalized many societal norms. We will work together to dismantle unhelpful societal norms through our awareness and use of language,” said Dr. Snyder.
