Sixth Multilingual Student Expo inspired by the “Multilingual Magic of Dreams”
October 1, 2024San Luis, AZ (October 1, 2024) – The community is invited to join First-Year English Composition students from the Arizona Western College San Luis Learning Center as they present the Sixth Multilingual Student Expo, themed, “Multilingual Magic of Dreams,” on Wednesday, October 9.
This semester, ENG107 and ENG108 multilingual students will explore the profound ways that dreams, aspirations, and ideas are shaped by multilingual expression. Attendees will have the opportunity to view a gallery of artwork, poems, and movie reviews illustrating the dreams of multilingual students. From research presentations on the connection between language and dreams to guided meditations, multilingual dreamscapes, personal testimonies, dance performance, and artistic showcases, the expo highlights the cognitive, emotional, social, and cultural influences that shape the multilingual dream experience.
Six scholarship winners will be selected from student presentations and performances. The $1,000 awards will be presented by Dr. Kathleen Iudicello, Vice President of Learning Services, and Reetika Dhawan, Chief Executive Officer of Entrepreneurial College & Vice President of Workforce & Healthcare.
Featured as a guest speaker at the expo is Dr. Alma Sandigo, an Associate Clinical Professor of BME/ESL at NAU-Yuma. With her extensive background in bilingual and multicultural education and leadership as a former president of AZTESOL, Dr. Sandigo has been a dedicated advocate for empowering multilingual students and educators across Arizona.
“The inspiration for the theme for this expo came from a dream I had after returning from my last summer adventure across Europe,” shared Dr. Sara Amani, Professor of Multilingual Composition/Specialist. “I dreamt I was wandering through a magical version of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, where different languages and cultures blended together. This expo is a reflection of that—how language colors the way we see the world, both awake and asleep, connecting us across borders and allowing us to express our deepest dreams, hopes, and identities in ways words alone often can’t.”
The event will be held from 3:00-4:30pm in Multi-Purpose Room 104 at the San Luis Learning Center, 1340 N. 8th Avenue, in San Luis, Arizona. The public and members of the media are invited to attend.
