March 7, 2019

Yuma, AZ (March 7, 2019) – Four high-achieving students from Arizona Western College were recently honored at the All-Arizona Academic Team Recognition Ceremony at the East Valley Institute of Technology in Mesa, Arizona.

This annual awards ceremony is held by the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society to recognize students chosen by their colleges for high academic distinction as well as for leadership and service to the community. To qualify, each student must be working toward an associate degree and maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Seventy-seven students were named this year, representing colleges from all ten community college districts in the state.  Each student was placed onto either the First, Second, or Third Team, and awarded a scholarship in the amount of $1,000; $750; or $500, respectively.

AWC San Luis Learning Center students Karen Castelo and Leilani Delacruz were named as Second Team members and AWC Yuma Campus students Nohemi Escobedo and Jennifer Vera were selected as Third Team members.

Castelo is currently majoring in Psychology and plans to transfer to Northern Arizona University to pursue a doctorate degree in Psychology. She hopes to work in community mental health services after graduation. Delacruz is majoring in Nursing and will transfer to NAU to earn a bachelor’s degree. She plans to work at Yuma Regional Medical Center.

Escobedo is majoring in Social Work and intents to transfer to NAU to attain a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. She hopes to use her education to work with child victims of abuse. Vera is currently pursuing several degrees at AWC with the goal of transferring to the University of Arizona to major in both Global Studies and Chinese studies. Her aim is to work as a translator overseas in diplomatic or cultural centers.

During the ceremony, each student received a medallion for their achievements given to them on stage by AWC President Dr. Daniel Corr.

The event was held in the Culinary Arts building at the East Valley Institute of Technology and was emceed by former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods. The keynote speech was delivered by Nathaniel Bush, a 2015 All-Arizona Academic Team member from Central Arizona College, who subsequently was named a national Silver Scholar. Bush is about to graduate from Arizona State University this spring with a master's degree in Social Work.
