AWC to celebrate Black History Month
February 13, 2020Yuma, AZ (February 13, 2020) – Students at Arizona Western College will have an opportunity to learn about Black History Month with several upcoming events and activities happening at the Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E.
Tuesday, February 18
Black History Month Movie Night & Discussion - 6 to 9 p.m.
In the grassy area behind the 3C Building, AWC will be showing the film “White Wash” which looks at the struggle and triumph of black surfers and the complexity of race relations in America. AWC History Professor Monica Ketchum will be leading a discussion before the film is shown. She spent several years catching waves and hanging with diverse groups of surfers and skaters from California to Australia and saw localism, not racism, as being the key conflict in surf culture. White Wash changed her understanding of the challenges faced by black surfers, both institutionally and culturally. This event is open to the public.
Wednesday, February 19
Prize Cab - 12 to 2 p.m.
Students will get picked up around campus by the Prize Cab (golf cart) and will have the opportunity to answer Black History Month related questions in order to earn highly sought-after prizes.
Soul Food – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A meal of fried chicken, collard greens, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and macaroni and cheese will be offered to students at the AWC Eatery.
Thursday, February 20
Discussion - 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.
AWC Professor of History Monica Ketchum and Residence Hall Director Tony Mitchell will be leading a discussion on “After the Fifteenth: How African Americans Won and Lost Voting Rights.” The discussion will be held in room BA 111 in the Business Administration building. This event is open to the public.
Mardi Gras Dance - 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Students will have a Mardi Gras Dance in the AWC Eatery. Mardi Gras themed food will be served. Students must have a student ID to get into the dance.
Thursday, February 27
Discussion - 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.
AWC Professor of History Monica Ketchum, Professor of History/Head Soccer Coach Kenny Dale, Professor of Political Science Adam Ekins, and Residence Hall Director Tony Mitchell will be leading a discussion on “Reclaiming the 15th Amendment in the 20th Century and the Current State of Voting Rights in the U.S.” The discussion will be held in room BA 111 in the Business Administration building. This event is open to the public.
There will also be a display on Black History Month located in the AWC/NAU Academic Library during the month of February.
