Basic Behavioral Health Sciences Track A

CERT - Occupational Certificate


Provide students with a foundation in the study of human behavior and prepare them to assist in caring for individuals with mental illness, challenging behaviors, and comorbid medical conditions. The focus of this program is on didactic knowledge, hands-on learning experiences, and practical training for students with no previous behavioral health, nursing assistant, caregiver, or medical assistant training or work experience.

Program Purpose


This program is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills vital to many behavioral health work environments

Learning Outcomes


  • Distinguish the roles and responsibilities of various members in a multidisciplinary behavioral health team.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills important in maintaining and establishing relationships.
  • Practice techniques and strategies to promote a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
  • Practice techniques and strategies to resolve and prevent future effects of compassion fatigue, workplace stress, and burnout.
  • Assess and document the complex needs of a diverse population in behavioral health and social service settings.
  • Distinguish between multiple mental illnesses and their common presentations.
