AWC Transfer Director Cordova Honored at State Level
May 18, 2017Martha Cordova, Director of Transfer Services at Arizona Western College (AWC), was honored with the AZTransfer Advocate Award for her outstanding work helping students transfer from AWC to Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona.
“Martha’s commitment to student success, specifically student transfer success, is shown through her dedication to innovative events and programs to ensure smooth and successful transfer into and from Arizona Western College. Her professionalism is second to none when it comes to assisting students,” said Bryan Doak, Vice President for Student Services at AWC.
Though Yuma and La Paz Counties have one of the lowest baccalaureate degree attainment rates in the nation, Cordova’s efforts have contributed to a 31.5% increase in Arizona Western College students who went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at one of Arizona’s state universities from 2010 to 2016. The Arizona average is 15.7% for the same measurement.
“Encouraging and inspiring students to continue their education to become productive members of our society is what we all advocate for at AWC,” said Martha Cordova. “I am blessed to be in a position where I can make a difference in the lives of many of our students and their families through my modest contribution.”
Cordova, a Yuma native and first-generation student, started out as a transfer student. She attended AWC and earned her Associate’s Degree in Business. From there, she went on to Northern Arizona University and completed her Bachelor’s in Business Administration and her Master’s in Education. Cordova has been working at the College for over 20 years.
The AZTransfer Advocate Award is given by the AZTransfer Steering Committee, an organization comprised of Arizona public community college and state university chief academic officers. The award recognizes individual efforts that contribute to the success of the Arizona Transfer System and is presented at the AZTransfer Summit, a conference for higher education professionals in Arizona.
