AWC celebrates Black History Month

February 16, 2023

Yuma, AZ (February 16, 2023) – Students at Arizona Western College will have an opportunity to learn about Black History Month during upcoming events and activities happening at the Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E

“The national 2023 Black History Month theme, ‘Black Resistance,’ explores how African Americans have addressed historic and ongoing disadvantage and oppression. Arizona Western College invites you to celebrate with a series of events planned to share Black wellness, art, literature, music, and community,” said Shara Skinner, Coordinator of Student Leadership and Activities.

Through Wednesday, March 1, the AWC/NAU Academic Library will be featuring a Black History Month display that will highlight books, music, film, and related podcasts for students to reflect on Black history and culture.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will also be a Mardi Gras Luncheon in the Eatery featuring Creole food, king cake, and beignets.

On Thursday, Feb. 23, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. students around campus will have a chance to get picked up by the Prize Cab (golf cart) to answer Black History Month-related questions and earn highly sought-after prizes. This event is hosted by the AWC Student Government Association.

Students will also have an opportunity to participate in Mardi Gras-themed Zumba on Wednesday, March 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
