Senior Day happening at AWC on Feb. 6


Yuma, AZ (January 31, 2019) – High school seniors in the Arizona Western College Talent Search and Upward Bound programs will be learning about scholarships and getting prepared for their first year of higher education during an upcoming Senior Day event.

On Wednesday, Feb. 6, the students will be visiting the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E, from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Seniors will be divided up on two different tracks, one for those going to AWC in the fall and the other for those going on to a university.

Nominations sought for AWC Hall of Fame


Yuma, AZ (January 28, 2019) – Arizona Western College is seeking nominations for the 2019 AWC Hall of Fame. Installed in 2013, the AWC Hall of Fame currently has 13 honorees, including 2018 inductees Dr. Kathryn Watson and Dr. George Montopoli, Coach Charlie Dine, and the 1983 and 1987 National Champion Softball Teams.

AWC is looking for nominees from Yuma and La Paz counties who have made a significant contribution to the mission of the college, or distinguished themselves in service to the larger world.

Former student shares Public Safety Dispatcher Academy experience


AWC now accepting applications for late-start program until Feb. 15 deadline

Yuma, AZ (January 24, 2019) – Before becoming a dispatcher, Shanell Hernandez had the impression that the job only entailed answering 911 calls. She quickly learned that the position involved so much more than just picking up the phone.

“It’s not just taking calls, you’re actually helping people over the phone,” said Hernandez. “You’re like a first responder in a way, because when someone calls 911, you’re technically the first responder until law enforcement arrives on scene.”

Paintings and drawings by Enoc Palafox on display at SLLC


San Luis, AZ (January 17, 2019) – Local artist Enoc Palafox is currently holding an exhibition of his paintings and drawings at the Arizona Western College San Luis Learning Center (SLLC), 1340 N. 8th Avenue, San Luis, Ariz.

The exhibition is free and will be available for public viewing at the SLLC until Friday, Feb. 1. People can stop by and see his work Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

High school students can earn AWC Carpentry Certificate through pilot program


Yuma, AZ (January 15, 2019) – Students now have the opportunity to obtain their Arizona Western College Occupational Certificate in Basic Carpentry while still in high school.

The final two courses necessary to earn the certification – Blueprint Reading for Construction and Concrete and Concrete Form Systems – are being offered to construction students at Kofa High School through an AWC pilot program. Students have previously had an opportunity to complete the first three dual-credit courses needed for the certification as well.

AWC faculty member to be featured at Scottish Burns Supper


Yuma, AZ (January 9, 2019) – Arizona Western College Professor Amelia Bowdell will be kicking up her heels to the tune of bagpipes and drums during Yuma’s upcoming Scottish Burns Supper.

The Scottish Burns Supper will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, at the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Dr. As part of the evening’s festivities, Bowdell will be performing several Scottish Highland dances to live pipe band music played by the United Yuma Firefighters Pipes and Drums band as well as Canadian bagpipers and drummers.

AWC Music faculty to perform during Concert Series


Yuma, AZ (January 8, 2019) – St. Paul’s Concert Series will feature Arizona Western College Music Department Faculty in Concert on Sunday, Jan. 27.

Faculty will perform vocal and instrumental classical music during the concert, which will begin at 5 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1550 S. 14th Ave.

The performance is free for the community to attend. Donations will be accepted to support music scholarships for students.
