National Science Foundation awards almost $600K for SFAz+8 CXM Project


Arizona Western College faculty to participate in rural community college math collaborative  

Yuma, AZ (June 13, 2019) – The National Science Foundation recently awarded a $599,929 grant to the Science Foundation Arizona Center for STEM at Arizona State University (SFAz STEM) to support an Advanced Technological Education Project, entitled: Impact of System-Wide Contextualization of Math in SFAz+8 Rural Arizona Colleges on Producing More Qualified Technicians (SFAz+8 CXM).

CTE summer camps provide several learning opportunities in June


Yuma, AZ (May 30, 2019) – The Arizona Western College Career and Technical Education (CTE) department is offering a number of summer camps in June on Drones, Construction Trades, Gaming, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Math Readiness, and Culinary. Classes will be held for a variety of age groups, ranging from 13 and up, at the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Avenue 8E.

AWC President honored with Excellence in Youth Education Award


Yuma, AZ (May 23, 2019) – Arizona Western College President Dr. Daniel Corr received the Excellence in Youth Education Award from the Pete C. Garcia Victoria Foundation in April at the Advocates for Education 2019 Awards Luncheon.

This annual award is presented to individuals in the Arizona public-school sector that have instituted policies and programs to enhance education and make a difference in the lives of students and the greater community.

AWC graduates 31 students from La Paz County campuses


Parker, AZ (March 22, 2019) – A total of 31 students recently graduated from Arizona Western College La Paz County campuses, with 12 receiving associate degrees and 19 completing certificate programs. This is an increase over last year’s nine associate degree recipients and seven certificate completions.

This growth has provided an opportunity for more students to become prepared for university programs and employment, which is in line with AWC’s Strategic Plan to increase the rate of baccalaureate degrees and eliminate poverty in the community.

Student selected for AWC Teacher of the Year Scholarship


Yuma, AZ (May 21, 2019) – Arizona Western College student Veronica Edwers is the Teacher of the Year Scholar for 2019. Edwers received a scholarship covering one semester of tuition for the 2019-2020 academic year.

She was selected for the award by AWC Teacher of the Year Fabiana Bowles, Professor of Nursing. Bowles shared that she chose Edwers from a group of approximately 143 students currently enrolled in the Nursing program.

“By far one the best things that came out of being selected for Teacher of the Year was the ability to pay it forward,” said Bowles.

Over 700 pounds of student-grown produce donated to food bank


Yuma, AZ (May 20, 2019) – Arizona Western College agricultural students have donated 719 pounds of produce to the Yuma Community Food Bank so far this year, compared to 549 pounds donated in 2018.

Donations grown at the Agricultural Sciences Land Lab this semester consisted of eight ball squash, summer squash, zucchini squash, spaghetti squash, and carrots. The produce was grown by Plant Science students as well as other members of the Agricultural Science Department.

Raspberry Jam coming to San Luis Technology Institute in South Yuma County


San Luis, AZ (May 15, 2019) – The Arizona Western College Informatics program and the Southwest Technical Education District of Yuma (STEDY) are joining forces to offer a Raspberry Jam for middle and high school students. This is the first event of its kind to be held in Yuma County.
