AWC Theater to present “Just Like Us”
September 26, 2019Production based on book about four Mexican girls coming of age in America
Yuma, AZ (September 26, 2019) – In October, Arizona Western College Theater will present a piece that will resonate with audiences.
“Just Like Us,” written by Karen Zacarias, is adapted from the book by Helen Thorpe. It follows the true story of four Mexican girls coming of age in America. The four friends from immigrant families in Denver straddle two worlds. Two of the girls hold legal documents, two do not. Against the odds, each finds her way into a good college, but the hurdles only mount from there. Student loans are not an option when you don’t have a Social Security number, and if your parents face deportation, your siblings may be moving into your dorm.
While this book was written in 2009, the subject matter is topical and timely, especially considering current immigration issues facing the U.S. Poignant and at times quite funny, “Just Like Us” is sure to start some interesting post show discussions. The actors involved in the production have all found something in the play with which they personally identify and are delighted to be sharing “their” stories with the Yuma community.
The performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 17-19, as well as at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 20, at the AWC Theatre on the Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E.
Admission is $5 for the general public, $3 for local students and seniors, or free with an AWC ID. Tickets will be available at the door.
