This course will teach participants basic air conditioning skills such as installing, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning systems. Their duties include inspecting HVAC systems, performing regular maintenance tasks such as cleaning filters, identifying issues, repairing or replacing defective parts, and ensuring that systems operate efficiently and safely.

Field of Interest
Participants interested in learning the essential skills required to become an entry-level employee in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. Training in various aspects of air conditioning and refrigeration include trouble-shooting, maintenance, repair and servicing of A/C units, related electrical controlling devices, motors and safety factors concerning the use of various refrigerants. Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will be prepared to test for the National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) Craft Skills certification in Basic Air Conditioning.

Type of Certification

Students will earn an AWC Occupational Certificate as well as craft certification from National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) in Basic Air Conditioning.

What You'll Learn

Upon completion of the class students will be able to:

  • Introduction to the field of air conditioning and refrigeration
  • The refrigeration cycle and basic servicing procedures are covered to include the use of gauges, removing and adding refrigerants, as well as leak detection.
  • Use of hand tools, materials, and related nomenclature of the component parts of a system and their relationship to and function within the system are stressed.
  • Theory of refrigerants, stressing pressure and temperature relations; the safety aspect in handling refrigerants is also covered.
  • An advanced course of study involving the various types of HVAC electrical controls and motors, wiring diagrams, and basic Ohm’s Law.
